Exploring the Best of Puerto Rico: A 4-Day Journey
As a half-Puerto Rican, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the island and its vibrant culture. Puerto Rico, an island in the northeastern Caribbean, is a treasure trove of stunning beaches, rich history, and vibrant traditions. Join me as I take you on a journey to explore some of the best things this island has to offer.
Day 1: Discovering Puerto Rican Beaches and Rich History
Morning
Our adventure begins in Loiza, a town steeped in Afro-Puerto Rican heritage, famous for its beautiful beaches and cultural significance. Loiza’s shores, like Playa Aviones and La Pocita, are perfect for both relaxation and adventure. We spent the morning soaking up the sun on the white sand beaches, enjoying the crystal-clear waters, and watching locals surf.
Midday
For lunch, we headed to Restaurant Villa Pesquera Herrera, a local recommendation known for its fresh seafood and authentic Puerto Rican dishes. We feasted on freshly caught fish and tostones (fried plantains).
After lunch, we journeyed to the San Juan National Historic Site. This UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the impressive Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, two forts that have guarded San Juan for centuries. As we walked through these ancient fortifications, we learned about Puerto Rico’s strategic importance during the colonial era and its role as a crucial trading port.
Evening
Our evening was spent wandering through the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan. The colorful buildings, with their Spanish colonial architecture, transport you back in time. It’s incredible to remember that this town was one of the first European colonized towns of the Americas! We dined at a local restaurant, savoring traditional dishes like pasteles. This dish is made of a seasoned masa (dough) from green bananas and root vegetables, filled with savory pork. Wrapped in banana leaves and boiled, they are similar to tamales but have a unique Caribbean flavor!
Day 2: The Magic of El Yunque and Local Flavors
Morning
Our second day began with a visit to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. This lush paradise is a must-see for nature lovers. It was about an hour drive from our stay in Loiza and is about the same distance from San Juan.
TIP: Make sure to reserve tickets in advance as there is limited space in the park. Spots fill up quick and reservations become available two days in advance. Reserve at this site: Reservaciones Para El Yunque / El Yunque Reservations, El Yunque National Forest – Recreation.gov
We hiked through dense vegetation, encountering waterfalls and spotting exotic wildlife along the way. The sound of the Coquí frog, a symbol of Puerto Rican culture, echoed throughout the forest, adding to the enchanting experience.
On our way back from the rainforest, the enticing aroma of BBQ drew us to a roadside stand serving pinchos, a popular Puerto Rican street food. These skewers of marinated meat, grilled to perfection, were the perfect quick bite and a testament to the island’s rich culinary traditions.
Evening
We ended the day at Los Kioskos in Luquillo, a series of beachside food stands offering a wide variety of local dishes. As the sun set over the ocean, we enjoyed a feast of seafood, washed down with a cold Medalla beer. The lively atmosphere and delicious food made for an unforgettable evening.
Day 3: A Day in Paradise – Culebra Island
Morning
Our third day was dedicated to exploring Culebra, a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico, renowned for its pristine beaches. We took an early ferry from Fajardo, which offered stunning views of the surrounding islands.
Here are some details on how we got to Culebra Island via ferry from Ceiba:
- Location: The ferry departs from Ceiba, a port town on the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, about an hour’s drive from San Juan.
- Duration: The ferry ride to Culebra takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour.
- Cost: The ferry is the more affordable option, with tickets typically costing around $2.50 each way for adults.
- Tickets: It’s recommended to buy tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, as the ferry can fill up quickly. Buy tickets at this site: Buy Tickets – Puerto Rico Ferry anclado por Hornblower
Upon arrival, we headed straight to Flamenco Beach, consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. The powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters were even more breathtaking in person. Spend the morning swimming and snorkeling to be perfectly surrounded by vibrant marine life.
Midday
For lunch, we found a charming local café and indulged in local coffee and an Acai bowl, topped with fresh fruit, granola, and coconut flakes. It was the perfect refreshment after a morning of beach activities.
Evening
The rest of the day was spent lounging on Flamenco Beach, basking in the sun, enjoying the serene environment, and indulging in more pinchos from a beachside stand. It was one of the most beautiful beaches we had ever been to and it truly lives up to it’s reputation! We would highly recommend making the trip if you have the time!
Day 4: Exploring Puerto Rico’s Hidden Beach Gems
Morning
On our final day in Puerto Rico, we set out to discover more of the island’s hidden beach gems. We started our day at Playa Mar Chiquita in Manatí, a unique natural pool surrounded by limestone formations. The tranquil, clear waters make it an ideal spot for swimming and snorkeling. Mar Chiquita is a lesser-known beach, offering a serene escape from the more touristy spots.
Midday
Next, we made our way to Playa Jobos in Isabela, a popular beach for surfing and sunbathing. The lively atmosphere here is a contrast to the calm of Mar Chiquita, but it’s perfect for those looking to catch some waves or simply enjoy the vibrant beach culture. We grabbed a quick lunch at a nearby beach shack, enjoying fresh seafood with a view of the ocean. We indulged in mofongo, a traditional Puerto Rican dish made of mashed plantains.
Evening
In the evening, we enjoyed a peaceful sunset at Playa Buyé in Cabo Rojo. This beach is also less crowded and offers stunning views as the sun dips below the horizon. It was the perfect ending to our beach-filled day and our four-day exploration of Puerto Rico.
Conclusion
Puerto Rico is a hidden gem, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and stunning beaches. Whether you’re exploring the colorful streets of Old San Juan, hiking through the lush rainforests of El Yunque, or relaxing on the pristine beaches of Culebra and Cabo Rojo, this island has something for every kind of traveler.
