Rome Eats: A Food Lover’s Guide to the Eternal City

Rome, the Eternal City, is a dream for food lovers! From traditional Roman pasta dishes to sweet pastries and creamy gelato, every meal is a chance to savor the city’s rich culinary heritage. My wife and I recently explored Rome’s culinary scene, and here’s our detailed food itinerary to help you make the most of your foodie adventure.

Breakfast: Cornetto and Cappuccino at Bar Farnese

Start your Roman morning like a true local with a cappuccino and cornetto (Italian version of a croissant, but sweeter). I adore the nutella-filled ones for a sweet indulgence, but the crema-filled version is just as heavenly. Bar Farnese is nestled near Campo de’ Fiori, this classic bar offers a perfect spot to enjoy your morning pastry while soaking in the Roman ambiance.

Whether you’re seated at the bar or standing with locals, it’s the perfect way to kickstart your day.

Lunch: Pizza al Taglio at Antico Forno Roscioli

For lunch, you must try the quintessential Roman pizza: Pizza al taglio! This Roman-style pizza, sold by weight, offers a variety of toppings on a light, airy crust. I would recommend trying many different flavors at Forno Feliziani, it’s nearby the Vatican museum and is a great place to fuel up before exploring the galleries!

Afternoon Pick-Me-Up: Espresso at Caffe Novecento

When your energy starts to dip, head to Caffe Novecento for a caffè espresso. This is a cute café centrally located with outdoor seating on a charming cobblestone street. In Italy coffee is enjoyed throughout the day, however Italians are very particular about not putting milk in their coffee past noon. If you need a little milk to dilute the strong Roman coffee opt for the caffè macchiato. This rich espresso “spotted” with milk foam is perfect for an afternoon boost.

Gelato Break: A Sweet Treat at Gelateria dei Gracchi

Rome’s heat is the perfect excuse to indulge in gelato! I recommend the chocolate and coffee flavors for a decadent treat. Gelateria dei Gracchi is renowned for its creamy texture and natural ingredients, this gelateria is another fantastic option.

Dinner: Traditional Roman Feast at Taverna Trilussa

Cap your day with a full Roman feast. I recommend dining at Taverna Trilussa in the quant neighborhood of Trastevere. Make sure to make a reservation as this place fills up quick! This restaurant makes their pasta by hand daily and specialized in traditional Roman cuisine. This is what I would order on my perfect day in Rome:

  • Antipasto: Supplì – fried rice balls filled with gooey mozzarella.
  • Primi: Amatriciana – a hearty tomato-based pasta dish featuring guanciale (cured pork cheek) and Pecorino Romano cheese. This dish is a personal favorite!
  • Secondi: Saltimbocca – tender veal cutlets wrapped in prosciutto and sage.
  • Contorni: Roman Artichoke – a seasonal side dish that’s both flavorful and unique.
  • Dolce: Tiramisu – creamy, coffee-soaked perfection.

Pair it all with a strong espresso to energize you for the walk home.

Drinks: Fancy Drinks at a Hidden Speakeasy

After indulging in Rome’s culinary delights, cap off your evening at Argot, a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of the city. This cozy speakeasy-style bar is perfect for unwinding with expertly crafted cocktails in a chic, intimate setting. Its low-lit, vintage decor sets a sophisticated mood, while the bartenders whip up innovative drinks tailored to your tastes. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic Negroni or a creative signature cocktail, Argot is the ideal spot for an unforgettable nightcap in Rome.

Bonus Recs:

Il Maritozzaro
For a classic Roman pastry experience, head to Il Maritozzaro, a beloved bakery known for its legendary maritozzi. These sweet brioche buns filled with rich, fresh whipped cream are a must-try for breakfast or a mid-afternoon treat. Locals rave about their light, fluffy texture and perfect balance of sweetness.

Emma
If you’re craving authentic Roman pizza, Emma is your go-to spot. This elegant trattoria serves up thin, crispy pizzas topped with high-quality ingredients, from classic margheritas to inventive creations. Their selection of antipasti and a well-curated wine list make it a fantastic choice for a casual yet refined meal.

Luciano
Experience elevated Roman cuisine at Luciano Cucina Italiana, where Chef Luciano Monosilio reimagines traditional dishes with a modern twist. His carbonara, often hailed as the best in the city, is a creamy, decadent masterpiece. The contemporary ambiance and impeccable service make this a dining experience to remember.

Conclusion

Rome’s culinary scene is a testament to its rich history and love for food. From breakfast pastries to gelato and hearty pasta, each meal is a celebration of the city’s culture and traditions. Buon appetito!
